From the moment we met Karen and Vashti we knew firstly their wedding was going to be fantastic, secondly they were such lovely people and thirdly we really really wanted them to book KISS Photography! The first two we were so right about and the third thing came true. So on the morning of 4th May we were at The Harbour Hotel in St.Ives with Vashti and Karen while they got ready for their civil partnership.
The getting ready was so much fun, the ladies had their own rooms that connected by a balcony. So we, the hair and make-up artists and the video guy could pop between the two, but they got ready independently. Both rooms were a flurry of excitement, friends, family members, flower girls and hotel staff popping in and out as the morning progressed. Karen and Vashti took it all in their stride and were just so excited and happy there was not one stressful moment.
I loved the fact there was two amazing dresses hanging up, pretty shoes and jewellery going on both sides of the wall and the love and happiness that surrounded this amazing pair was incredible.
Karen was making us laugh, and then cry practising her speech, Vashti was on top form with her winning sense of humour, and I can truly say we all had a perfect morning.
Karen wore a fantastic dress with the most incredible diamanté detail on the back and a beautiful ruffled train, while Vashti in a strapless slightly empire line stunning number. Both ladies looked a million dollars and didn’t stop smiling
Karen is in the Navy and the wedding had wonderful touches of her working life. A sword arch after the service, pudding to cries of “DUFF no hands DUFF” which basically means eat without using your hands in any way! ‘Fines’ after the meal which if I heard correctly involved lots of bottles of rum! and yet the theme for the wedding décor was a soft blue and cream nautical, bunting, table runners, pretty seasonal wild flowers, soft candle light, beach pebbles and the most fantastic beach cake made by Cake By Design.
We went to the beach for lots of photos and had a fun time watching strapping Navy lads pick up the girls, Karen’s Mum and Dad having a paddle, Daisy the flower girl having a quick ’99 ice cream.
The speeches were perfect, I don’t think either of the happy brides actually stopped smiling, at all through till 11pm when we finished. The band was great. What more can be said?
Thank you Karen and Vashti for looking after us, for being the easy going wonderful people you are, for making our working day so very lovely. Wishing you a lifetime of smiles and laughter together. Enjoy this little taster of your day! X
Here is an interview that was submitted to The St Ives Harbour Hotel about their experience:
Here we have a typical How did you meet?
We met online but then found out that my sister-in-law was on the same squadron as Karen at Culdrose, so it could have happened in real life soon after anyway as they both deployed together for 3 months, 6 days after Karen & I first met in person!
How did she propose?
Beautifully & simply at home after Karen had returned from a deployment. It was a total surprise and although Karen planned it for our upcoming holiday in Thailand she was too excited to wait, and I’m so glad she didnt as it was perfect & very ‘us’ (and it meant we got to phone everyone to tell them the news!)
Did you have a theme?
We didn’t want to get too tied to a theme but when you are planning you see so many beautiful things & ideas its easy to get sidetracked from your original plan! We tried to keep ‘vintage beach’ in mind when planning, as we both liked all that we saw associated with this
What were your flowers like?
We only had flowers for our ceremony, we wanted mostly blue and white, simple and wild and our florist (Jane Adele in Porthtowan) got it spot on.
What catering did you choose for your wedding?
We chose from the catering options offered by St Ives Harbour Hotel which perfectly fit our requirements & budget, especially as they were very accomodating with dietry requirements and extra canapes we wanted.
Why did you choose to get married by the sea?
Because we couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else! I am from Cornwall & Karen is in the Navy so the sea has always played a massive part in our lives.
What did you choose for your entertainment?
We chose The Vision band following a recommendation for a friend; they played several sets & helped us put our own i-pod playlists on inbetween which created a great atmosphere
Were there any special touches on the day?
We were lucky enough to have sword arch and get a flying visit during training from a Merlin helicopter & a Seaking helicopter after our ceremony at Pendennis, which was amazing! Our place names were on pebbles collected from local beaches, that we hand wrote, our favours were little bags of personalised M&M’s and our cake was a six colour rainbow when cut into!
What was your favourite moment?
Very hard to choose just one! Being surrounded all day by all of the wonderful people that we love most in the world was just incredible for us, we felt so much love and happiness for us from everyone. Our ceremony was beautiful, intimate and just perfect, and we were able to take everyone down to a nearly deserted Porthminster Beach under a clear blue sky for photos, which was just brilliant.
Where did you go for your honeymoon?
We were lucky enough to spend two weeks on a couple of islands in the Maldives, absolute paradise & the perfect start to our married life as we stayed in the St Ives Harbour hotel until Monday morning, then flew from Heathrow.
What is your advice for couples planning their own wedding?
Try to enjoy the planning, its all part of it & can be quite fun, and there is no point getting stressed because come the big day you won’t remember the small things as you’ll get swept up in all the excitement! Trust the experts (florists, photographers, venue staff etc…) as they have so so much experience that if you choose the right ones it will all be perfect!
